1) Funeral Providers Should Not Wait for FTC’s Funeral Rule to be revised
Author Details: John W. Crane, D.B.A.-Belmont Abbey College
Abstract:
Deathcare in the United States is an important industry that affects all consumers at some point and is considered an unsought product category. The FTC implemented the Funeral Rule in 1984 along with a revision in 1994 to protect consumers in ensuring price itemization and timely disclosure of pricing information. However, the Funeral Rule does not address the internet as a digital or communication channel for funeral providers and, as a result, does not require prices to be published on websites or shared electronically upon request. Several industry stakeholders have conducted market research studies to measure consumer behavior in seeking price information for deathcare-related products and services on websites. The findings consistently support that funeral homes and other providers of deathcare products and/or services should not wait for the FTC to update the Funeral Rule regarding online transparency, but rather be proactive in their marketing strategy and brand management

Abstract:
Kimura disease (KD) is a rare chronic inflammatory disorder of unknown etiology, typically characterized by painless subcutaneous nodules or masses in the head and neck region, regional lymphadenopathy, and eosinophilia. The disease predominantly affects young males from East Asia. This case report describes an unusual presentation of KD in a 36-year-old male with initial symptoms of dry cough, weight loss, and peripheral neuropathy, followed by the development of subcutaneous nodules in the right hand and right axillary lymphadenopathy. This case highlights the diverse clinical manifestations of KD and emphasizes the importance of considering this diagnosis in patients with atypical presentations.

Abstract:
Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is a common cause for hemolytic anemia which can precipitate acute hemolysis when exposed to oxidative agents. Acalypha indica, a medicinal plant known as “Kuppameniya,” in Sri Lanka is used as herbal medication as well as a plant-based dish and it has been reported to induce oxidative hemolysis and methemoglobinemia in individuals who are susceptible.
We report a case of a 44-year-old previously healthy male with well-controlled asthma who was having features of exacerbation of asthma presenting with acute onset dyspnea, and dark-colored urine after ingestion of Acalypha indica for the first time. Clinical and laboratory findings revealed acute intravascular hemolysis, indirect hyperbilirubinemia and acute kidney injury with possible methemoglobinemia. The patient required mechanical ventilation, blood transfusions, therapeutic plasma exchange, and oral vitamin C. Methylene blue was avoided due to risk of oxidative stress. He made a complete recovery after active management with multidisciplinary care.
This case emphasizes the importance of recognizing herbal-induced oxidative hemolysis and methemoglobinemia, especially in undiagnosed individuals with G6PD-deficiency, in regions where such traditional remedies are commonly used.
